Pantomimes and The Pantomime Theatre / Pantomimer og Pantomimeteatret |
||
This is my attempt to systematize a description of some Pantomime Plays in tabular form. Note, that the performances previously lasted for longer time than they do today, and they used parts of the plays' story lines in other plays. In the old days only the main story was determined when the performance began. In addition they improvised. In 1919 ballet master Paul Huld (1885 - 1969) cut down all the old pantomimes at about half an hour of playing time because of failing interest by the audience and the light restrictions of that time after World War I (1914 - 1919). The playing time of a pantomime performance is nowadays (1998) still about half an hour. From the season 2001 the Pantomime Theatre has begun methodical to examine, restore, and re-stage all of the pantomime performances, their mimic language, their music, and the pantomime plays' stories so they become more logical and continuous. The playing time are still kept on about half an hour. Furthermore the subordinate and character parts are in some extent adapted from one season to the next among other things the number of the season's available performers is taken into consideration. |
Derudover improviserede man. |

The Casorti Pantomimes When the classical pantomimes are called The Casorti Pantomimes in Denmark, it is not because anyone thinks that Pasquale Casorti or his son Giuseppe has been the writer. It is only in their (and the Price familys) productions they are introduced into Denmark. |

Harlequinade or The Magic Pantomimes English Pantomimes. Harlequinade: A pantomime, farce, or similar play in which Harlequin plays the principal part. Harlequin: A comic character in Commedia dell'Arte and the harlequinade, usually masked, dressed in multicolored, triangulated tights, and carrying a wooden sword or magic wand. Commedia dell'Arte: Italian popular comedy, developed chiefly during the 16th-18th centuries, in which masked entertainers improvised from a plot outline based on themes associated with stock characters and situations. |

The Craftsman Pantomimes The Craftsman Pantomimes or The Artisan Pantomimes are named in this way because they are set in simple, middle-class environs. The gallery of characters is adapted accordingly. This particular tradition has its origins in England. |
Håndværkerpantomimer Håndværkerpantomimer kaldes således, fordi de foregår i jævne borgerlige håndværkermiljøer. Karakterernes galleri er tilpasset i overensstemmelse hermed. Traditionen med håndværkerpantomimer kommer fra England. |

Crazy cuisine à la Harlequin. When Harlequin rules in the kitchen anything may happen. His goal, of course, is to get through to Columbine. But annoying Pierrot and Cassander in the process is also a priority. |

If you can't join them, beat them! Harlequin and Columbine have to struggle with the grumpy Cassandre, who will not allow his daughter to marry. The young lovers think up a scheme to clear their path to happiness. Disguises - such as a bogus doctor and a statue - play an important part in the scheme, and both Cassandre and his servant Pierrot must take a beating before the happy end of the story. / Her er smæk for skillingen i bogstavelig forstand. |

He who loves a lot must endure a lot, especially when he is Pierrot. Harlequin is awoken by the Good Fairy, whom he tells of his love for Columbine. He can't have her, however, because her father has chosen a rich, but stupid suitor for her. Harlequin and Columbine elope together to be blessed by the Good Fairy. |

Love and a hot temper set the house - almost - on fire. Naturally Harlequin is not allowed to marry his darling Columbine. Her father, Cassandre, has other plans for her: an old, rich and ridiculous suitor has entered the scene. Harlequin, however, receives a helping hand from the Fairy Queen, who wishes him to have Columbine. She is throwing a tantrum because Pierrot teases Cassandre, the suitor, and anybody in his immediate surroundings. It is all pretty confusing until in the end Harlequin and Columbine are brought together in the heavenly halls. |

A classic story about young love between Harlequin and Columbine that her father, Cassander, is definitely not interested in. Instead she shall marry an older wealthy bear leader. Luckily Harlequin gets help by a sorcerer who makes his sword magic. When he strikes people at their shoulder with it they instantaneous fall asleep. That makes in particular Pierrot to suffer who both sleepwalks and dances with that bear that forms an important part of the story. As in all good stories, ours has a happy ending. Finally the union of Harlequin and Columbine is blessed by the Fairy. |

Harlequin is in love with Cassander's daughter Columbine. He is kicked out of the house because Cassander wishes to marry Columbine with the wealthy old and ridiculous officer The General who comes to propose to her. Harlequin and Columbine runs away together out in the forest where the good Sorcerer promises to help them. They both get caught by Cassander's helpers who get order to shoot Harlequin. The Sorcerer shows himself for him in that moment he is shot and helps him through no man's land back to life. Harlequin now makes life so hard for Cassander that he at last resign himself. However Columbine's troubles are not at all over yet. In a beautiful garden Harlequin meets the three Graces who to such a degree with their tempting dance spellbinds him that he totally forgets his Columbine. But the little Cupid is on guard and gets him awaken from his spell and makes sure they get married. |

Story, summarized / |
Yet again Cassander is tricked into consent by Harlequin and the fair Columbine. Harlequin will do anything to get to Columbine! At the beginning there is harmony. Columbine is sewing dutifully, but Harlequin has found a way in and his intentions are not entirely honorable. Harlequin disguises himself as a tailor's apprentice as well as a dancing instructor and seek employment at Columbine's father the tailor Cassander merely by being close to her. And with a little help from the Fairy of Love the union of the two is finally blessed. Pierrot, an ironing board, a magic sword, and a pleasure-seeking Amager-farmer's wife (hawker i.e. vegetables and fruit seller) plays important parts in the performance! |

Omnibus coach which is used for public conveyance of passengers. The first Omnibus in Denmark was started in 1841 between Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. It was drawn by 4 horses and seated 14-16 people. The ride cost 1 Mark apiece. It should be compared with that the few hansom cabs (horse-drawn vehicles which for money drives passengers to where they must want it) took at least 1½ Daler (9 Mark) for the same ride. Within a short time 3 Omnibuses were started. As time went on there came more with stop at Amagertorv in Copenhagen whose coachmen sound their horns diligently in order to tout for passengers. The Omnibuses were one of that time's big sights. |

Story, summarized / |
Apart from the well-known Commedia dell'Arte characters the story has a cruel Tryntyrk (Snout-Turk) who is a man-eating beast with pig's snout and tusks. That makes rough and solid fun on the old stage where Tryntyrken (The Snout-Turk) cut up a poor Farmer whose parts of the body flies in the air. The performance goes from knockabout farce to lovely dance for Harlequin and Columbine who gets proper steps and a moonlight pas de deux by the water. All of it cheerful and in fine pace emphasized at the same time by the light and charming music which follows the story with emphasizing of the drama and with a melodious seductive waltz tune when the scene is laid for dance. Finally there is humorous local colour when familiar tones as in the vaudevilles are used. |
